MS. MARVEL: THE NEW MUTANT

Well, we called it... Ms. Marvel is now a mutant. And also, still an Inhuman... When we recently reviewed "Fallen Angel," a comic about the death of Ms. Marvel, we speculated that they would try to align the character with what was introduced in the TV show "Ms. Marvel," starring the Canadian Iman Vellani... Well, not only did what we predicted happen, but they even outstepped us by getting the star of the "Ms. Marvel" TV show as one of the writers of the new comic, with the help of Sabir Pirzada! So, ho [...]  Read more >

GREAT SUMMER READ: I WAS THE CAT

The summer is nearly over but it is never really too late to enjoy a masterpiece... I WAS THE CAT is one of them. There are books that entertain, books that inform, and then there are books that transport you to an entirely different world, captivating your imagination and leaving you with a lasting sense of wonder. "I WAS the Cat" by Paul Tobin and Benjamin Dewey is undoubtedly one of the latter. With its beautifully illustrated hardcover edition, this graphic novel is a delightful masterpiece that deserv [...]  Read more >

ALPHA FLIGHT IS BACK!

Alpha Flight is back and it seems a little off to a slow start, written by the Canadian Ed Brisson and illustrated by artist Scott Godlewski. We start in British Columbia, with the team discussing of a mysterious recent decision, which makes some of them fear for the anticipated public reception.  The team, for the moment, consists of the Guardian, Puck, Snowbird and the Shaman.  And they seem to agree that they will respect their recently taken decision, no matter the outcome. Then we are off to Ottawa, [...]  Read more >

THE MATERIAL TRILOGY: PLASTIC, VINYL & PLUSH

This series, comprising "Plastic," "Vinyl," and the latest addition, "Plush," delves deep into the psyche of its characters, marrying over-the-top violence with a bizarre sense of humor and a surprisingly tender human core and it is a testament to the unique, darkly humorous, and unapologetically twisted storytelling that comics can offer.  Let's start with PLASTIC, their original material and quite weird first story in the trilogy... "Plastic" introduced us to a former serial killer's twisted love story [...]  Read more >

THE FALL (LA CHUTE)

Have you noticed the surge in cultural productions dedicated to post-apocalyptic societies in recent years? These worlds depict humanity grappling with chaos, learning to reorganize amidst turmoil. There's a profusion of them, perhaps even an excess, making it hard to distinguish the substantial from the mediocre, as they often blend together by adopting similar narrative frameworks. Consider, for instance, Jaret Muralt's "La Chute," whose third installment hit bookshelves in late spring. The original work [...]  Read more >

Waddling through Half a Century: Howard the Duck's Quack-tastic Journey

In a quacky twist of fate, the infamous Howard the Duck waddled his way into popular culture fifty years ago, and since then, he has left a permanent mark on the world of comics, film, and fandom. Created by writer Steve Gerber and artist Val Mayerik, this anthropomorphic duck from another dimension first appeared in "Adventure into Fear" #19 in 1973. Who would have thought that a cigar-smoking, wise-cracking duck could become an iconic figure in the Marvel universe? The Early Quackery (1970s-1980s): [...]  Read more >

MY STORY IS THAT OF PALESTINE

750,000 Palestinians are said to have been detained in Israeli prisons since 1967. This figure is at least what the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics claims. For the month of December 2020 alone, 4,400 Palestinians are reported to have been incarcerated, many of whom were under administrative detention. These are extrajudicial imprisonments that primarily target those who concern Israel, those whom the State believes could potentially pose threats to its security and future. Preventive imprisonments, [...]  Read more >

CAPTAIN VOODOO

The graphic novels that feature pirates are like drawn westerns, they never disappear. Despite believing that the genre is archaic, moribund, if not dead, it remains ever-present. Year after year, we find talented creators who decide to delve into it, teasing the voracious appetite of fans eager to devour the exploits of these buccaneers. And that's a good thing. In any case, it's a good thing for me. Because I admit, I always enjoy stories of sailors traversing the seven seas in search of treasures and de [...]  Read more >

Lands of Ogon

Summer is wonderful. The weather is beautiful, it's hot, and we relax. We take a break from the hustle and bustle of modern autumn, winter, and spring life. But when it comes to comics, summer is a bit of a desert. There are far fewer releases. However, it's not necessarily a bad thing as it forces us to read the ones at the bottom of our reading stack. The ones we haven't had time or the will to take a look at yet. Usually, we quickly understand why they haven't been read yet. However, sometimes we come a [...]  Read more >

Advocatus Diaboli. Turin's Shroud.

What impresses me the most about Christian Quesnel is his great ability to adapt subjects into comic books that seem impossible to ever adapt to me. Whether it's the Lac-Mégantic railway tragedy, the scripted suicide story in Quebec, or Lovecraft's Quebec City stay, Quesnel enjoys taking risks and appearing where he is least expected. His brand-new graphic novel, which is not actually new since it was a project he had completed as part of his master's degree at the Multidisciplinary Image School of the Uni [...]  Read more >

THE FLAW IN ALL THINGS...

If you're searching for a comic book that will leave you on the edge of your seat, look no further than "Karnak" by writer Warren Ellis. With its gripping narrative and fascinating protagonist, this series is an absolute page-turner from start to finish. Warren Ellis is a renowned figure in the comic book industry, known for his exceptional storytelling and innovative approach to the medium. With a career spanning decades, Ellis has consistently pushed the boundaries of the genre, captivating readers with [...]  Read more >

STRANGE TURTLES

Crossovers... Sometimes they are good (Civil War, Dark Reign, Secret Invasion).  Most of the time they are eye-rollingly bad.  In any case, they are both a bane and a boon for comic book shops and readers alike. I am not gonna lie but when I laid eyes on this Stranger Things/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cover, I did just that: roll my eyes and shudder, nearly in fear at how atrocious this could turn out to be... Now the day is here where the feared comic is physically in front of my very eyes.  And it is [...]  Read more >
